Its economic potential lies in agriculture and tourism, as this area is part of a world heritage site. Okhahlamba has a population of approximately 140, 000 and consists predominantly of poor black Africans (90%), of which 80% live mainly in areas with scattered homesteads, but also on adjoining freehold land (10%) and white-owned farms (10%). Poverty and unemployment are widespread, painting a harsh socio-economic and health profile that is in stark contrast to the spectacular beauty of the surrounding Drakensberg Mountains.
